Sailing With Josh

Thanks to Josh and Small Craft Advisor for picking up The Resourceful Sailor. This was a special installment based on nostalgia and déjà vu, harkening back to the Different Drummer days. Click the logo below to read the article.

Thanks to DW for the considerate cruising kitty donation. We had some back and forth about a new jib for his Flicka and the best sail clew. I appreciate and respect him for it. Anytime. Sampaguita. Sam′pə gē′tə. What a beautiful name that no one can understand on the radio, at least here in the States. It’s not any better on the telephone, or in person, for that matter. All of the Harbor Patrols encountered so far are at a loss with it. It is also noted they have all been white. I mention this because Spanish speakers do not have any trouble with it. Nor Filipinos…. Say that three times fast. Sampaguita and I are still resting here at Twin Harbors. For logistical reasons, we decided there was no rush to get to San Diego. The Baja HaHa Rally boats are likely beginning to congregate there, and we don’t wish to compete for anchorages and services with that group. Since they are an organized event with the support of San Diego Harbor, it might be that Sampaguita could… Read More

Well, they’ve done it again. ‘Lectronic Latitude and Latitude 38 have published another Resourceful Sailor piece. I can’t be more grateful. This one is about reviving 80s technology and using it for good. A special thanks to editors Monica and Tim for keeping it alive. I recently met Monica and her husband Jay in Sausalito when Sampaguita and I happened to sail into town. They rolled out the red carpet for me,… Read More

This happens every afternoon as the thermal westerlies kick in. It feels like I’m in a M. Night Shyamalan movie. I’m planning my escape under and out of the Golden Gate. It requires an outgoing tide and NOT a strong westerly wind. Afternoon departures are not on the menu. I met Monica Grant, the editor for ‘Lectronic Latitude, and her husband, Jay. They are proper people and sailors and it was an… Read More

Sampaguita Crosses the Strait of Georgia.

A version of this article was first published on the July/Aug 2019 issue of Small Craft Advisor Magazine. This is a popular post. It must have some value. Please consider a donation to help keep it available for reference and future consumption. Thank you. A special thank you to 48 North Magazine for publishing my piece, Exploring Local: Kilisut Harbor, in their February 2021 issue. Kilisut Harbor was my go-to destination for 2020 for reasons I’ll let the essay explain. You can get a subscription to 48 North Magazine or pick up a free copy at your local chandlery or marina. There’s also a cool article about a new Maritime High School, and it looks like… Read More

My second attempt (actually my third, but #2 was un-noteworthy due to early becalming and retreat) to circumnavigate Indian and Marrowstone Islands entirely under sail with Sampaguita, my Pacific Seacraft 1985 Flicka 20, was a success.  I departed at 1100 hours, raising the jib as I passed by Boat Haven Fuel Dock. With a full WNW wind and a flooding tide, I sailed down Admiralty Inlet under full sail, making great time. Rounding… Read More
