No, The Resourceful Sailor did not run off and join the circus. The circus came to him. Thanks to Monica and ‘Lectronic Latitude for keeping The Resourceful Sailor alive. This latest installment is about how I used and stowed a folding bike when cruising the Pacific Northwest in Sampaguita. It was published on Mar. 31, 2025. I thought it would be fun to overlay the three Flicka 20 Pacific Voyages that I know about. Sampaguita, captained and crewed by myself, left Port Townsend, WA on August 22, 2023, and returned to Port Townsend, WA on July 8, 2024. We sailed down the North American West Coast to La Paz, Mexico, and then to the Marquesas. From the Marquesas, we sailed non-stop to Port Townsend, WA via Hawaii. Kawabunga!,… Read More

The following Resourceful Sailor piece was meant to compliment another, previously published by ‘Lectronic Latitude on April 19, 2024, called The Resourceful Sailor Talks Whisker Poles — the Good and the Better. A question often arises about the proper way to use a whisker pole. Does it go on the sheet? Can you attach it to a soft shackle? Can you attach it directly to the clew? The Resourceful Sailor is not… Read More

“Tack,Tack,Tack.” A friend, reader, and donor commented:  “I just don’t know how you provision for so many days, on a 20 foot boat. I’ve never gone more then 7-10 days, that was a catamaran 45′, in the BVI where we moor every night, and island hop.”  It sounds to me they have a pretty good start. I didn’t buy a boat yesterday. I started out small and short in my sailing trips… Read More

If you find any value in this, whether informational, entertaining, or thought-provoking, (otherwise, why are you here?) please consider a small donation. PayPal: wheelersf@hotmail.com Sampaguita sits in slip L09 at Marina CostaBaja situated at the entrance of La Paz channel. It’s a nice marina. Nicer than we need, but under the circumstances, the only place we could get a reservation. I was in Bahia De Los Muertos trying to solve my solar… Read More

Viva La Mexico. A new chapter has begun as Sampaguita arrived in Baja California’s Ensenada this morning about 10AM. It was a long slog from San Diego that took about 25 hours. But we weren’t the only ones. We planned on an all day and an overnight, but apparently that’s the sail du jour. There were no fewer than four of us who did the same thing. The crux of the biscuit… Read More

Say that three times fast. Sampaguita and I are still resting here at Twin Harbors. For logistical reasons, we decided there was no rush to get to San Diego. The Baja HaHa Rally boats are likely beginning to congregate there, and we don’t wish to compete for anchorages and services with that group. Since they are an organized event with the support of San Diego Harbor, it might be that Sampaguita could… Read More

Sampaguita Crosses the Strait of Georgia.

As the summertime approaches in the Pacific Northwest, I am reminded of my first Canadian single-handing expedition in Sampaguita, a 1985 Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20, to the Sunshine Coast. I had read about the cruising destination of Princess Louisa Inlet and fancied a look for myself. There are memories of stopovers, excursions, wildlife, people, sights, and sailing that have flooded back. Upon reviewing the photos, only a fraction of which are… Read More
