The 2022 expedition I have joined through the Northwest Passage this summer is about to get underway. If successful, it will be my second transit. The first in 2019 was east to west. This second attempt will be west to east. Leaving from Anacortes, WA, it will be quite some time before we reach the Bering Strait, the actual beginning of the Passage, with a hopeful arrival to France in September. If… Read More
If you live on a boat during the winter, in the Pacific Northwest for example, you know it requires constant condensation management. The Resourceful Sailor explains one modification he undertook on Sampaguita, a Flicka 20, to increase air circulation, mitigate condensation, and promote drying in an article published by Latitude 38‘s online magazine, ‘Lectronic Latitude, on April 25th, 2022. Now is a good time to do some spring cleaning and take notes… Read More
Looking for a little more light in the cabin? How about a better view from down below? The full article was published in Latitude 38‘s online magazine, ‘Lectronic Latitude, on January 5, 2022. Thank you for checking it out, and special thanks to Monica and the crew,… Read More
A new Resourceful Sailor Series installment is here! After a rig refit, the mast of Sampaguita, a Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20, needed to go back up. Could it be done at the dock? Latitude 38‘s online magazine, ‘Lectronic Latitude, has published “Raising the Mast of a Small Sailboat with the Resourceful Sailor – The Solo Version” on December 17, 2021. This article and video go… Read More

I can’t thank Monica and the crew at ‘Lectronic Latitude enough for their support. They have done it again. On March 12, 2021, they published my latest Resourceful Sailor Series piece, Outboard Thermostats – An Open and Closed Case. “There is a simple test to determine if a thermostat is opening and closing properly. Place it into boiling water. It should open in the water and close when removed.” Click the link… Read More
Sampaguita, a Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20, and I went out for a sail one late November day in Port Townsend Bay, WA. I took this video with a head-mounted GoPro HERO 7 and have created clips centered around a few activities. There is no mood-inducing music added, just the sounds of sailing. Splashing water, roaring wind, flapping sails, winches and lines, my breathing, and the occasional talking to myself. And most of… Read More
There is another YouTube video from Walde Sailing. The episode shows some awesome panoramic video of Dixie Cove Provincial Park in Kyuquot Sound. It coincides with my blog post: Wonderful Cove and Wonderful People In hindsight, this was my favorite anchorage of the 2018 Vancouver Island circumnavigation. It was very protected with good holding. Without VHF reception and a weather forecast, it felt the most isolated. No other boats were heard or seen. The narrow… Read More
There is another YouTube video from Walde Sailing. This episode shows some really great video of black bears in the wild! It also coincides with my blog post: I’d Rather be Anchoring and Vancouver Island Wildlife Click the link for more about Tiffany and Lyndon’s story. They in their Niagara 35, and me in my Flicka 20, tag-teamed down the West Coast of Vancouver Island for 11 days in June 2018. They are very… Read More
