Have you ever skyed a halyard on your sailboat? Not yet? Give it time. Here we go again…‘Lectronic Latitude, the online version of Latitude 38, was kind enough to publish another Resourceful Sailor article called The Resourceful Sailor: Skyed Halyard Retrieval Made Easy for their September 13, 2024 issue and I really appreciate it. And there’s a video to boot. It discusses how I retrieve a skyed halyard on Sampaguita, a Pacific… Read More
Thank you Latitude 38 and ‘Lectronic Latitude editor, Monica Grant, for publishing the latest installment of The Resourceful Sailor with a rare hard copy appearance in the August 2024 edition of the magazine. In this piece I give experiential insight on Sampaguita’s solar energy solution while voyaging. I wrote this while at anchor in La Paz, Mexico waiting for the season to head for Marquesas.
People ask what I eat on a Flicka 20 with no refrigeration. This is a Sampaguita classic. Thanks to ‘Lectronic Latitude for publishing this on June 17, 2024. Thanks Monica. Click here for the full article.
Marquesas Update: The ship has come in! The supply ship that is, Aranui 5. Bigger than I thought and more hustle and bustle than I imagined. Lots of traffic, lots of containers, everywhere is restocked and people are in the prowl for newly arrived goods . Apparently an “every couple weeks” thing this time of year. It looks like I’ll get to haul out. The boss says OK. I hitchhiked into town… Read More
Thanks to Monica and Latitude 38’s ‘Lectronic Latitude for publishing another Resourceful Sailor installment. This one is about how I keep Sampaguita’s drop boards from coming out if I get knocked down or capsized. Not what you want to think about, but you better. If you have your own version of how to secure your drop boards, feel free to comment at the bottom of the article. Thank you Latitude 38! This is my first hard copy publication with them (but it’s online too) and appears in the November 2023 issue. Special props to Monica and John for looking out for The Resourceful Sailor. The Resourceful Sailor’s Whale Tales appears in the Sightings section of the mag and highlights some whale encounters I had on my journey down the West Coast in Sampaguita, a Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20, this… Read More
This happens every afternoon as the thermal westerlies kick in. It feels like I’m in a M. Night Shyamalan movie. I’m planning my escape under and out of the Golden Gate. It requires an outgoing tide and NOT a strong westerly wind. Afternoon departures are not on the menu. I met Monica Grant, the editor for ‘Lectronic Latitude, and her husband, Jay. They are proper people and sailors and it was an… Read More

Sampaguita‘s circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in June, 2023 inspired some new Resourceful Sailor pieces. Here’s one about reinstalling a Navico Tillerpilot 1600. I decommissioned this gear when I bought Sampaguita in 2013 for various reasons, but recently brought it out of retirement. Thanks to Monica and ‘Lectronic Latitude, Latitude 38’s online mag, for publishing it on July 17, 2023.
